Bay Area sound visionary Mike Cadoo returns as Dryft with a powerful, beat-driven dystopian journey that fuses cinematic ambience, abrasive industrial textures, and emotionally charged IDM-infused sound design into a dark, immersive sonic experience.
Cinematic dystopia forged in rhythm
Mike Cadoo is a Bay Area–based, multifaceted sound artist with roots in deep cinematic ambience and post-industrial experimentation. He has released albums under his own name as well as under the moniker Dryft. The first album I had the opportunity to hear was From Stasis, a highly acclaimed and alluring melodic ambient work marked by subtle sonic incursions and a heartfelt, if not dramatic, aura.
I was also deeply moved by Pang of Being, created in collaboration with P. Stephan, which stands among my favorite releases of 2024. The album unfolds through colossal, beautifully evocative yet ferociously abrasive tragic hymns that evolve within a sinister, menacing, and decaying industrial landscape. Beyond his artistic output, Cadoo also runs the well-established and internationally acclaimed label n5MD.
With this new release, Cadoo returns to his original project, Dryft, delivering an intense, beat-driven dystopian acoustic-industrial work punctuated by flowing ambient textures and lush interludes. The album immerses the listener in a cybernetic dystopian world shaped by dark atmospheres and ominous resonances. Breakbeats take center stage, interacting with shadowy downtempo electronic waves. The result is perplexing, chaotic, and enigmatic, yet emotionally vibrant within its fascinating sonic structures.
All in all, this atmospheric release comes highly recommended for fans of meandering cinematic and industrial soundscapes with a distinctive broken edge and sandblasted electronic groove.
