Dead Fader’s It Works 1 is a mixed affair in that it offers four songs up in either light or dark mode, slow or fast depending how you look at it. Dead Fader draws from a variety of influences on this album, including but not limited to Boards of Canada, J.S. Bach, Pan_sonic, Clark to Kanye. Really nothing gets left off the table. The EP opens with “Spinning Wheel” which almost sounds like an Arabic inspired fever dream with synths and bowed strings over a heavy thudding beat drenched in reverb. The track builds masterfully while keeping that odd, hallucinogenic vibe to it. “Sweeties” is a gentle almost elegiac piece built from detuned, synth horns and distorted drums with a nod towards the braindance works of Wisp. Frenetic barely describes the speedy kicking bass and drum attack of “Climaxed” as it rocks along like squirrels jacked up on Crystal Meth and coffee. “Inject” has a feverish quality to it like a dream influenced by strong cold meds. The arpeggios pound at the melody against sweet strings and a crushing distorted kick drum. A short and sweet one, It Works 1 is a good listen from an up and comer.
