Brainquake :: Excess Denied (Mahorka) — Double video premiere

Excess Denied by Brainquake (there’s a genre in itself), is the latest album on Bulgaria’s Mahorka—a splintered post-industrial, broken beat smorgasbord of synths, vocals, and downtempo extrusions.

Excess Denied by Brainquake (there’s a genre in itself), is the latest album on Bulgaria’s Mahorka—a splintered post-industrial, broken beat smorgasbord of synths, vocals, and downtempo extrusions. “Circle Upon Circle” lays it all out for the listener, eight minutes of fractured electronics with a groove submerged in buzzing synthesizers as “Freigth” rips its percussion into hundreds of pieces, the industrial angle at full tilt, Brainquake has created a behemoth of ravaged electro-chemical warfare. As Excess Denied continues, its darker edges become further exposed, diving into muddy trenches where synths wax and wane (“The Number 12”) and crispy electronic morsels bend and contort in sublime fashion (“Static”). And yet, even with the influx of tangled apocalyptic rhythms (“Ghosting Society”), Brainquake manages to excavate scorched and visceral soundscapes—have a listen to “Slowed By Gravity” as a prime example. Reminiscent of Cryusrex’s allOfme.hyde (Negative, 2004) through to cEvin KEy’s latest Resonance (Artiffact, 2021)—the blend of arcane and distorted industrial washes is fully cultivated on Excess Denied.
