BASTARD :: Full Bleed EP (Renraku)

A spontaneous yet refreshing EP; foraging glitch acrobatics with a roughened textural style.

Foraging glitch acrobatics with a roughened textural style

Full Bleed sees Minneapolis-based BASTARD shed click-hop goods and left field glitch shards on the ever dependable Renraku imprint. Kicking off with slow-motion funk, “Down Tremendous” offers its sizzling trajectory in a hazy mist. Broken beats fidget across crumpled downtempo beat patches as “Ransomware Plugg” ups the ante with additional crunched rhythms and spaced-out blips and bleeps. BASTARD’s refined and chiseled bass slabs and collapsing electronics are elevated on the title track where elements of Valance Drakes and teebs poke through; and yet its backbone remains chilled to the touch as rumbling bass echoes. That’s the magic here—continuing to burn fuel as this EP unfolds; “Battery Acid” is perhaps the highlight with its ruffled synths and acidic warbling as closure “Opaline” takes a relaxed jaunt through lullaby tones and twitches coalescing in the breeze. A spontaneous yet refreshing EP; foraging glitch acrobatics with a roughened textural style.
