Aurora Halal | Haron :: Dance My Pain Away / The Langolier Hustle (BAKK)

A weird, shimmering and never static work of diverse dancefloor debauchery.

BAKK is a musical collective hailing from the European heartland of electronic music, The Netherlands. Formed from a like-minded group of music enthusiasts, Still Serious Nic, Handsome Thomas and The Social Lover, an eponymous imprint has sprouted from The Hague. Last year the label was born with a split 12”. Now its twin has arrived.

Washington’s Aurora Halal opens with “Dance My Pain Away.” The name might be familiar, the New York based artist is part of Innergaze (with Steve Summers) and organizes parties for Mutual Dreaming. Styles melt. Lively squirming bars are tousled by cascading claps, percussion scaling with homage to Chicago. The track shifts, consistently. A central melody is established but Aurora Halal constructs fleeting harmonies and playful polyphonics around decaying chords. Haron occupies the flip with “The Langolier Hustle.” Rasping drum patterns slip and stagger before cold arpeggios rise. Computer bulges form, bugs crawling through to over-complicate at times. The track’s foundations are unstable, rumbles and shakes constantly moving the goal-posts for a piece of engaging experimentation.

BAKK is a new imprint, yet it already looks set to explore some interesting ideas. With two release their belt, the Odd Beat Radio founders has explored a sweep of sounds. A weird, shimmering and never static work of diverse dancefloor debauchery.
