Alongside the revival of minimal synth is the modern resurgence. Imprints like La Forme Lente and Wierd have pioneered a new breed of synth artist. Another platform for exciting analogue wave artists is Treue Um Treue. The label, and its subs, have explored a host of sounds; but for the latest it’s a return to minimal synth.
Ame De Boue brings his debut album to a shop near you. Ame De Boue is half of the two man outfit Dolina, a Franco Belgian group who cut their LP teeth on Treue Um Treue. Flying solo, Ame De Boue introduces L’Inconfront Necessaire. The album immediately hits with the variety present. Synth wave, cold pop and post punk trauma. The title piece builds with synths and strings in a moody solitude. There are undercurrents of Automelodi or Frank (Just Frank) to the sounds, but with darker rivers running. “Scared” courses with industrial tones, the breathy lyrics embodying frustration and disappointment. Whimsy and unease pervade some of the pieces, as in the haunted fairground “La Ronde des Masques.” The flip opens with the analogue beauty of “Something Human.” Synths shimmer with sombre vocals to create a wonderfully rich piece. Angst is never far from the album, embedded in tracks like melancholic chirpiness of “Fun to be Dead.” But despite the overcast aspect of the album it is now gloom that dominates. Somewhere in the sorrow is a kernel of joy locked in the synthesizer sounds.
Synth wave is one of the more difficult sounds to penetrate. Few record stores stock decent new releases and the multitude of labels can be hard to navigate.
