A unique collection and audiovisual retrospective that goes a long way in commemorating Cory Mills‘ memory.

Recently, EC Underground published a seventeen-piece suite, recorded between 2021 and 2023, as a memorial album for Cory Mills. The album spans a multitude of braindance, glitch, experimental, and IDM genres, where you can easily experience Mills’ appreciation for artists like Clark, Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, Prefuse 73, Radiohead, Battles, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Autechre. The May 12th release date also coincides with what would have been Mills’ 41st birthday. However, the capacity to create distinctive melodic strands laced with flickering beats is what distinguishes the album from others in the same field (see “Project_MopUp.Song_Fuck.Again” and “Indefinite Incompletion”) and goes a long way to expand these unique genres.

The stretched twelve-minute synth exploration of “Empty Couch Nest” investigates the boundaries of time and space, while the brittle kaleidoscopic rhythms of “Mighty Fine,” “VideoGlitch” and “I ve Never Heard Of Aphex Twin” are a great illustration of how electro and frenetic breaks can easily bust through our bass bins with high-energy propulsion. This album’s blips and bleeps cascade, with tracks like “Sunndayy” providing extended mechanical fragments to consume.

Introspective pieces like “Gratitude,” “Apology,” and “Meh” give the impression that Cory Mills wanted to offer some resolve for the citizens of Planet Earth as he’s reached a new plateau in the universe. Ultimately, all that’s left is for us Earthlings to take in these heartfelt soundscapes and enjoy them with friends and family. A unique collection and audiovisual retrospective that goes a long way in commemorating Cory Mills’ memory.
