Very few IDM imprints have been able to maintain such an impacting compilation series, and yet Neo Ouija ventures ahead full-speed with their 9th Cottage Industries—this time a massive 3x glass mastered CD set ships in January 2020 in a 200-pc limited edition, and available now as a digital download. What’s on tap you ask? 36 tracks, precision beats, bass, and bleeps to close out 2019 (until the CD arrives in January) featuring new(er) and seasoned electronic music practitioners. This isn’t just any collection, it’s a foray into the next wave of experimental electronics.

I was immediately drawn to dive into my favorites like Karsten Pflum, Velum Break, Logreybeam, Proswell, Dialed, Min-Y-Llan, Olaf Wempe, Carbinax, Weldroid, exm, BLAEN, Zainetica, and 4T Thieves, however, Numberbear, Weld, Inigo Kennedy, Isaac Rohr, Erell Ranson, h7 buffer, and WRNR are now clearly on my radar.

Seriously though, Neo Ouija have literally compiled another veritable feast of sonic delights from audio sculptors across the planet that merits a good listening from front to back. It’s hard to believe that 20 years have elapsed since the first Cottage Industries, a disc I still cherish to this day as a genre defining IDM staple that hasn’t aged at all featuring ultimate classics of the scene—Phonem, Bauri, Plod, Geoim, Penfold Plum, Geiom v Infant, Herrmann and Kleine, Quinoline Yellow, Yunx, Clatterbox, Solenoid, and Consumer Durable. Passing the proverbial torch, Clockwork Manor offers parallel musical sunbursts as it extracts a handful of experimental electronic sub-genres with a firm grip on where it’ll take the next generation of avid listeners.

Not surprising is that Lee Norris (Neo Ouija founder) has compiled this outstanding compilation with longtime friends Martin Boulton (Touched Music) and Mark Streatfield (Rednetic).

Clockwork Manor: Cottage Industries 9 is available on Neo Ouija.
