Xu :: Floater (Cathedral Transmissions)

Nicola Fornasari (aka Xu) is a complex and multi-directional sound artist coming from Cremona, Italy. After notable short handed editions on Eilan Records, Triple Moon, Thirsty Leaves and Twice Removed, Fornasari gets back to us with a new corpus of exceptionally moving and obscure sound collages and immersive drone tapestries. Most of the compositions on Floater combine in a subtle way aleatoric sound manipulations from a wide array of acoustic instruments and gadgets with longitudinal e-guitar noisy signals.

The album starts with the critical, enigmatic and silently ritualistic mantra “To Sink (Toward the Bottom of the Eyeball).” “Blurred Feeling” carries on this fundamental and meticulous articulation of micro process sounds—detached piano notes, metallic motifs and reverbs—and smoothly micro-tonal sequences. The two following pieces encompass the same musical schema, incorporating this time more emotionally evocative elements within a poetical descriptive mood. Mournful sound waves are mixed with ultra-minimal melodies to reinforce the existential feeling of confinement. Sound metaphors and projections of memory, nostalgia and reflective ego trip. An interesting work and another fine example of isolationist and grainy dronescaping experience.

Floater is available on Cathedral Transmissions.
