A diverse album, one that combines vocal samples and strange melodies that echo hip hop’s best producers.

After reading that, surely everyone can understand why “delightfully weird” are the words that come to mind after listening to P.P. Roy‘s comeback album after twelve years. Watch The Dough Not The Whole shows an artist willing to stick by his guns and explore the sidelines of beat based music. It is a diverse album, one that combines vocal samples and strange melodies that echo hip hop’s best producers

This, however, is balanced with the weirder tracks on the albums. The ones that almost do not have a beat and can best be described as a kind of ethereal hip hop take on ambient music. Tracks such as “Nude Swim” and “Restricted Information” showcase disjointed beats and a couple of hard to identify sounds, but they all add up to the fun of the album. When P.P. Roy embraces the weird, off the cuff beats is when the music starts to become remarkable. The short (fourteen seconds) title track should be proof of this as it is a statement of the playful quality of the artist, something that is often lost in both electronic music circles as well as beat based ones. P.P. Roy‘s comeback album is a surprising and welcome addition to the electronic music landscape.
