Trying to avoid pigeonholing Tzolk’in into tribal electronic realms is no easy feat. The duo comprised of Gwenn Trémorin and Nicolas Van Meirhaeghe continue to successfully manipulate simmering bass lines and scratched sonic architecture as is the case with The Sixth Sun. Maneuvering through harmonic shadows filled to the brim with effervescent rhythms, there’s a thumping aura that surrounds this recording that must be consumed in one fell sweep.
As Tzolk’in embarks on a themed release which realizes that the Mayan calendar concerning the end of 2012 was not fulfilled and that mankind now resides in the era of The Sixth Sun—bringing past into present in order to build a brighter future—a new dawn with track titles named after Mesoamerican deities symbolizes the averted catastrophe of 2012.

Built up and broken down into lengthy tracks, these epic slices forge their way into vast open spaces, evolved ambient pulsars and unfettered post-apocalyptic beauty. Rather than flowing into darkened corridors, Tzolk’in delivers melodic textures (much in line with Zero Degree, Phonem et al) that slowly rips apart the landscape with its hypnotic dosage. Recreating soundtrack vistas that rattle the senses, The Sixth Sun is a welcomed exploratory follow-up to Tonatiuh (Ant-Zen, 2010). Brooding low-end meets light fractures which further embeds Tzolk’in’s perfectly executed audio dynamics. May the tribal forces that inspire this duo continue to gravitate.
