Stefan Blomeier :: Unexpected Journey (Lux Rec)

Unexpected Journey melts House structures, Blomeier utilising the mechanics of the sound as a canvas for his lucid abstractions. A bold and beyond the dancefloor 12” from a new talent.

I fear for how many times I’ve typed the word Glasgow. Throughout my reviews this windswept city has come up time and time again. Perhaps it’s my limited focus. Never! More than likely it’s due to this small city punches well above its weight in terms of electronic output. Cue someone new. Stefan Blomeier is another protégé from Scotland’s largest city. This hardware enthusiast is of Danish stock but has spent his days in Scotland, amid the deep fried haggis and Techno clubs. Blomeier first arrived on vinyl in 2011 and has been quiet since then. But, for their latest, Switzerland’s Lux Rec has called on this 26 year old virtuoso for three tracks and an Unexpected Journey.

Fluctuating waves and bitter chords introduce “Dashing Through Tunnels.” A thumping bass gives ballast as the Scot wanders and weaves, this analogue alchemist moulding 303 chemicals into broad cerebral chains. A rich analogue quality characterises Blomeier’s sound, the Glaswegian painting his music with a myriad synthesizer palette. Deep textures are laid down for “A Path Leading Nowhere.” Rounded melodies are floated, one atop another, with drum programming employed to tie the piece to memories of Chicago. “Singular Encounters” closes as a more recognisable work of House, Jak in particular. Full bodied basslines coalesce with claps before a drum machine cat is set amongst the pigeons. Flurries of warbling synth shudder and scamper amidst pulverising bursts from the 707.

The immediate comparison is a lazy one, Legowelt. True Wolfers has explored so many styles that a range of artists could be seen as similar to the man from The Hague. But it Blomeier’s dedication to hardware, his attention to detail and his vivid harmonies are what link him to the Dutch synth-man. Unexpected Journey melts House structures, Blomeier utilising the mechanics of the sound as a canvas for his lucid abstractions. A bold and beyond the dancefloor 12” from a new talent.

Unexpected Journey is available on Lux Rec.
