Murphy Jax ‘Lost Soundtracks Main Themes’

The cold hasn’t effected Lux, countering the seasonal change with an amplification of productivity. With CCO still fresh on the shelves Lux Rec have hooked up with Murphy Jax of Turbo and Clone fame. Mr Jax hit the headlines when he teamed up with the legendary Mike Dunn for It’s the Music. With Lost Soundtracks Main Themes, Murphy Jax side steps the usual house mantra for something different.

The 12” title hides no secrets. Murphy Jax takes on the mantle of Fabio Frizzi, of Goblin, of John Carpenter; creating an analogue centred soundtrack for a lost laser-disc of the 1980’s. “A Cop in Chains” opens and the track is post-apocalyptic devastation. Tapering melodies are supported by a steady machine beat before Arp and Roland atmospherics descend. The hunt continues into “Escape from Phoenix VI.” Murphy Jax tweaks the Carpenter formula, maintaining the rich and textured analogue chords but adding a pulsating snare to add some extra teeth, “Slowly Walking Dark” sees Jax adopt the sounds of The Terminator, adopting Brad Fiedel’s moody electronic movements whilst injecting dancefloor possibilities. For “Film Music 1983” a barrage of 707 claps is softened by brash and bold piano chords for a Chicago style end title sequence.

Synthesizer soundtracks were part and parcel of the 80’s movie. The likes of Tangerine Dream and Vangelis were at the apex of this analogue silver screen association. Some modern acts have replicated and some have even covered it, Zombie Zombie’s The Works of John Carpenter. Murphy Jax doffs his cap and tries his hand at emulating the great movie score writers of the 1980’s. Drop the needle, close your eyes and you might just see a gun wielding Kurt Russell.
