Joe Drive and Exoplanets finishes off a quality year testing the limits of many genres—utilizing elements of House, Techno and Electro and incorporating these supposedly disparate sounds into three strong pieces.
[Order page] Just before the New Year dawned Lux Rec managed one last piece of vinyl to end 2011. Joe Drive is an up and coming artist, releasing on labels like Jamal Moss’ Mathematics. For Lux Mr Drive serves up three helpings, blending Techno with some acidic House in the form of Exoplanets.
“Clone Replacement” is an otherworldly piece of Techno. The track has a touch of House to its composition, but the terse beats and clinical undercurrents have more in common with E.R.P. or vintage Underground Resistance. Subaquatic rumblings introduce “Crossing the Forbidden Planet.” The track has more of a House feel than its predecessor, Chitown echoes coming through in the elasticated 303 lines. But Joe Drive doesn’t adhere to one sound, Techno aspects circling. The B-Side is dedicated to the epic “Saturn 15.” The track slowly builds with the Italian artist driving a heavy chord past light beats. A powerful one to finish.
Lux Rec have an excellent year. Starting out 2011 with the complexity of dRUMMAN and onto The Definition of Jak, Lux stretched the boundaries of House with some cracking tracks. Joe Drive and Exoplanets finishes off a quality year testing the limits of many genres—utilizing elements of House, Techno and Electro and incorporating these supposedly disparate sounds into three strong pieces. A clever and functional record for fans of Chicago and Detroit.
