Forging open environments
Third solo album, Statica Memoria, sees zakè return to Affin, long-time purveyors of refined techno (head: Joachim Spieth) and ambient drift of the kind he excels in. Over the years zakè‘s Affin releases have grown into a distinct body of work, shaped by inquiry into duration, resonance and the spaces that emerge when sound is afforded due time to unfold.
Zach Frizzell has honed a particular practice in his long-form Ambient, forging open environments in his composition that free the listener to shift along a cline of consciousness-attention-absorption (cf. Eno’s ignorable-interesting dyad). Focus on minute shifts in timbre, harmony and resonance may cede, attention dissolved, to unfocused wandering within the listening object. Minutes may pass before registering a piece as still unfolding; it becomes a space to purposively navigate or simply sink into, its chronostasis affording movement through sound without destination. This aspect—of an environment to enter and inhabit vs. object of focused attention—creates a distinct space for zakè in Affin‘s catalog.
Over its course the album unfolds as a continuous passage through this expanded sonic terrain, four compositions ranging from the vaguely unsettling eerie opener “All Things Made Distant” to the more cathartic softened white noise of “The Light Was Withdrawn” and the gentle uplift of the closing title track. Overall, a furthering and deepening of ongoing sonic inquiries, Statica Memoria makes for an impressive display of zakè’s craft, exhibiting an intuitive grasp of transformative sonic alchemy.
Statica Memoria is available on November 26, 2026 on Affin [Bandcamp]
