Adepta Editions have found a kindred spirit in Daniel Pringle. The label’s pursuit of emotive electronics with contortionist rhythms is part of The Jaffa Kid’s DNA. A superb pairing of pieces, two that can ignite the right floor as well as giving the mind space to roam.
A bittersweet quality inflecting the contrasting textures
For a number of years now, Spain has established itself as a focal point of electronics. Labels like Analogical Force in Madrid, Withhold and Evel in Barcelona, have been flying the flag for thought-provoking machine music that bites with broken beats and undulates with acid. Since 2021, Adepta Editions is a Barcelona based imprint that has taken up the banner of forward thinking electronics. Vinyl has been the medium of choice. Artists like Global Goon, Roger Van Lunteren and ScanOne have graced its doors with a limited pressing run allowing for scope and variety. A new kid is joining the roster, a prolific talent from the British Isles: The Jaffa Kid.
No stranger to the above-mentioned labels, The Jaffa Kid (Daniel Pringle) is a dynamo of musical productivity. Dare to look at his Discogs page and you will be gob smacked by the volume of music this man has made. His output is matched by his ability and range. From deep ambient and fragile funk to full-throated jungle and techno, the Newcastle man’s music is a true treasure trove of delights.
In Adepta Editions fashion, two tracks make up AE-16. Donning his Qeta pseudonym, Pringle remixes his own work with “Xphor.” The Blitz Mix releases a volley of percussion. Snares surge and rim-shots roll as a tempered tone circles to soulful string. Amen breaks dawn and fade, vocal samples tremble into this churning creation of acute angles and enveloping warmth. Remaining under his Qeta mask, the Blow Mix of “Trigon” races out of the stocks. Despite the piercing percussion speed, a brake is applied to the tempo by the docile and somnambulistic melody. This whimsical fairytale-like key pattern plods through the skittering beats and robust kick, a bittersweet quality inflecting the contrasting textures.
