A diverse and rewarding record
Some readers may be rolling their eyes at me once again covering a release from The Jaffa Kid. I can guarantee, no fan of Daniel Pringle will be disappointed to hear that, once again, the British musician has a new freshly pressed record. Photosynthesis Pt. 2, five tracks, is hitting stores, care of 030303.
Rising notes and a driving thump are at the core of “Amazon,” the beginning of a journey deep into this Newcastle based artist. “Drum Mode” sees Pringle go even deeper. Chugging, rattling rhythms support thick throbbing basslines as solemn strings descend. A superb piece. The flip is charged with a blustery energy. “In the Morning” rides on arpeggios gusts and clean rhythms before silken keys cascade in a piece that finds a restful balance. “Etafe” opens in undulating waves of warm ambience. A kick breaks these ominous and stirring atmospherics before clatters of percussion call to mind Pringle’s forays into broken beat and jungle. Whether or not the closer, “Rudiman” is an homage to techno stalwart Shawn Rudiman, is debatable. The quality of this finale is not. The split percussion of “Etafe” is expanded with samples, a lurking melody casting a shadow as drums grow to bruising strength.
For those wanting to dip their toe into the audio world of The Jaffa Kid, Photosynthesis Pt. 2 is a perfect introduction. For the seasoned enthusiast, it builds on what is growing into an every more impressive physical catalog. A slew of styles culminate to create a diverse and rewarding record.
