Steve Hauschildt returns after six years with a new album on Simul, still experimenting with the vast territories of audio research and panoramic, sentient ambient music on Aeropsia. It is said that this album marks a new step in Steve’s life, a radical change of location that opens up new possibilities and new connections. Thanks to his fruitful collaboration with Kranky and, more recently, with Ghostly International, this sound artist has gained a solid reputation in the universe of ambient/IDM music and in anything challenging about advanced electronica (with a melodic heart). His soundscapes are at once catchy and profoundly meditative, installing the listener in perfectly musical journeys far from the dull routine of existence.
I used to be an avid listener of his side project Emeralds, which delivered more than fine pieces of modern electronic music. Emeralds follows the path of kinetic-chilling electronic music, operating a dialogue between deeply serene synthesized waves and hypnotic, drive-in pulses. The opening track starts with a soothing soundscape in stillness. With “Your Call Is Important,” we navigate through a fascinating and groovy electronic dreamscape made of lovely synth pads and lush electronic textures. Crystal melodies, almost aquatic and fluid electronic scintillations, embellish the ensemble, as in the vibrant, unearthly and diaphanous “Dividua.” Some echoing and mysteriously evocative acoustic piano parts are intertwined with syncopated and lyrical electronic grooves, as in the transportive and playful “Pyramidal.”
If you are into the lush, elegant, spacious and caressing beat-inflected ambient of ASC, Tycho, Deadbeat, DJ Olive, Arovane, Bvdub, and Joachim Spieth, it is easily recommended. A mesmerising minimal ambient-techno album with a sense of mystery and narration, surrounded by beautifully warm, slow-moving and nightly atmospherics.
