Brotherhood of Sleep :: Enter the Nuummite Cosmos (Zazen Sounds)

If you are seeking background music to accompany a descent into a post-apocalyptic, neo-mythological literary universe—something akin to the worlds of Lord Dunsany, Arthur Machen, or Abraham MerrittEnter the Nuummite Cosmos is particularly well suited.

Zazen Sounds represents a serious force in the promotion and development of extreme and abstract cinema associated with the occult, dark magic, eschatology, lost antique cults, and metaphysical cosmology. The label also extends its work through a regular magazine dedicated to music steeped in mysticism and occult imagery. Among the more notorious acts signed to the label—and of clear interest to lovers of gloomy industrial and ritual ambient—are the eerie soundscapes of Shibalba, Phurpa, Nam-Khar, and Vortex.

Brotherhood of Sleep is a recent side project founded by emblematic sound artist Bart Piette, known for his post-industrial ambient project Dead Man’s Hill. Over the past two decades, he has remained a quietly active figure in the underground, notably through powerful and immersive releases on Polish labels such as Beasts of Prey and War Office Propaganda (later known as Rage In Eden).

I first encountered Brotherhood of Sleep through Devotional Hymns to a Brilliant Flaming Sun, released in 2024 by Winter-Light. That debut already brought forward an utterly bleak ceremonial vision, driven by clanging percussive patterns and ominous textures. This new offering continues in a similar vein—an immersive and haunting exploration built on abyssal rumbling drones, blasting ritual elements, monastic sampled choirs, and otherworldly, telluric electronics.

The result is exceptionally transportive: a moody, almost Dantean deluge of sulphurous sonics. It recalls pioneering dark ambient works such as Aldebaran and The Place Where the Black Stars Hang. The overall aurality is perfectly bleak. If you are seeking background music to accompany a descent into a post-apocalyptic, neo-mythological literary universe—something akin to the worlds of Lord Dunsany, Arthur Machen, or Abraham MerrittEnter the Nuummite Cosmos is particularly well suited.

Highly recommended for fans of death industrial and for those drawn to alchemical, neo-liturgical, tribal-tinged futuristic ambient with a sinister edge—somewhere between Schloss Tegal, Vestigial, Brighter Death Now, Beyond Sensory Experience, and Inade.
