This anthology is CV FREQS‘ first experimental electronic sounds compilation, the sound is all electronic with loops and glitches and filters and whatnot, which puts together work from thirteen diverse artists in the vibrant CV Freqs collective. This is not made for sleeping so for heaven’s sake sit up and pay attention. Hang on, like it or not, the next track will be something different.

Loula Yorke “Book Club” 05:52 — Loula Yorke is a composer, sound artist and improviser who uses electronics, video and participation to create work that dances in the spaces where the personal meets the political, a UK-based modular synthesist and educator. Opening right away with crisp electronics, voices emerge, the loopy textures keep weaving new stuff in, strange new sounds and talking about actual book themes. There are some clear words but chaos always wins, voices echoing with other sounds, playing with speed, the beat keeps the motion forward, flickering word bits bubble along, we end up on the beach.

Cherif Hashizume “Before It Collapses” 06:34 — Cherif Hashizume is a producer, DJ, songwriter, and innovator who was born in Kobe, Japan. He moved to the UK at the age of 18, an artist whose thirst for new sonic territory has led him to the cutting-edge, experimenting with AI, VR, improvisation, and interactive art pieces. I hear tall strange blocks holding up the weight of the surface world coming out of the darkness slowly, building a beat, ringing echoes and atmospheres that change and shift with a stuttering tempo, which becomes sometimes rather aggressive, heading out into space for the end.

Harry Mindgame “Just Call Me Modul8r” 05:23 — Harry Mindgame is on a mission to expand his creative horizons and explore new possibilities in the world of music, a journey in music, tech, modular synthesis, sound systems, and the exploration of music and sound, with a relentless drive and passion for music, particularly in hip-hop, R&B, and house music. Harry Mindgame is the Founder of Mindlab Recordings and is also recognized for his DJing skills and promoting events that highlight various musical genres. He has been actively involved in building projects and collaborations within these genres. Recently, he has delved into modular synthesis to expand his sound palette and has focused on deep and soulful house music, showcasing his connections in the music scene. Into the mouth of the whirling dark tunnel ahead, layered tapping on bamboo chimes, whirling blades, warped metal and marimbas, dark electronic rustling and scurrying, until the lost beat comes back and dominates everything.

Ned Rush “200624” 05:00 — Duncan Wilson (aka Ned Rush) is a musician, producer, developer, curator and broadcaster, a sound and media artist and internet personality. The British YouTube personality is known for his unique approach to music production and sound design. His work often features a blend of experimental techniques and a humorous sense of humor. Here the rapid beat takes off and there we go flying and hobbling, jumping about, bipping and bapping, things are jumping in and out, the tempo stays fast. Now an alien is singing something confusing or maybe sad. I think maybe frantic is the next word, a rapid beat relentless and riveting, playful and precise, we keep up somehow as percussive adventures explode and bounce along, then it comes home.

Nagasaki45 “Noise in Jelly” 02:46 — NAGASAKI 45 is a hardcore band from the Bremen, Hamburg, Melle and Bünde area. Brutal beats pound and punish, sharp and abrasive, there might have been a strange angry bat hallucination, the odd buzzing beats chop up the darkness, the beat is like a machine gun. I can endure this with no worries.

Quentin Leonetti “Valve Check” 02:43 — Quentin Leonetti is a guitarist and composer from Dour, Belgium. After releasing music under the names Electret and Antoine De Muynck, he is now performing under his own name. His last live album was recorded during the online VEMOM festival. He is known for his electronic and ambient music, utilizing custom software and techniques to manipulate sounds, resulting in music that is textural, powerful, and evocative. Slow angels approach from the other side of the planet, changing layers of wandering chaos forming smooth sheets. From the somber glitchy darkness electronic birdlike creatures are ringing, the feeling is kinetic, new whistling unfolding and observing, fluttering, flickering, making inverted patterns, now they have gone.

Finlay Shakespeare “No Free Rein” 02:43 — We have a solid new wave burning twitchy beat here, this is all about the punchy beat, bending and nearly breaking emotional pop angst tension. I imagine a guy with a skinny black tie dancing on fire, a frantic energetic agitpop singer venting his concerns.

Bernhard Rasinger “Au Revoir Petit Prince” 02:45 — Bernhard Rasinger is an engineer, visual sound artist and cofounder of the art association NewJörg Vienna, he has performed at various international experimental music festivals, including Ars Electronica and Superbooth. He is famous for his amazing live art laser technology shows that combine modular synthesizers and state-of-the-art laser technology. His work often creates a hypnotic audiovisual experience, where sound and visual elements are synchronized to enhance the audience’s perception of music. Here I hear odd buzzing echoes and twisted notes, a dark sly beat that is both curious and symmetrical, some growling low tones making angular parting threats, inching up steadily, the ticker and the tone getting more powerful, never in a hurry, rather minimal tinks and tones, sometimes things get stranger.

Extractor Fan “Dog” 02:40 — The artist Extractor Fan is likely a reference to David Shrigley, a British artist known for his satirical and deadpan works that explore the absurdities of everyday life. Inspired by the noisy judder of his foundry’s extractor fans, Shrigley has recorded his own vocal imitation of the machines in four different octaves. His work often features sound installations and installations that play with mundane objects, such as extractor fans. I could be wrong, verification is deceptive. Maybe the banging booms are like a barking dog, trying to get off the leash as we are finding our way through a ping pong tournament. About half way through the dogs start to talk, not bark but make word-like utterances, are they talking or just moaning? I might hear some clicky stuff too, sputtering electronic woodpeckers lead into a strange creature boogie percussion jam outro.

F£RG MON£Y “Sound Grab” 06:03 — Starting from wandering in space, with loopy textures, maybe a keyboard with odd fish that wander in and out, things whirl about, then they are gone, then they are back to continue where they left off, twirling blinking lights, a whirling bird of electronic origin. I imagine that now a long spindly form walks through the garage bumping into tools on strings, they ring and clatter. Things get quiet, now here comes some kind of tone or flutter, the beat has quietly taken over, we are funkin’ and groovin’ with robots, feel the steady rolling buzzes and throbbing, they just flow on and something else comes along, now the police are here but they turn out to be friendly robots too, eventually the gigantic electronic spider just dances away.

Modgeist “Onaya” 03:26 — Caught up in the addictive universe of modular synths, Modgeist, whose real name is Mikaël Charry, is a French electronic artist known for his unique blend of techno, electro, and experimental sounds. Modgeist explores the infinite possibilities of a tailor-made Eurorack modular system, and his live performances oscillate between techno progressive and electro downtempo, infused with mysticism. He is recognized for his energetic live performances and has performed at numerous international events, showcasing his talent and influence in the electronic music scene. This modern ghost has a funeral tone to start, a solemn churchy organ in dark cathedral echoes and glows, remaining mostly dark until the beat gets a good gallop going.

HRTL “Therapy” 04:11 — HRTL, a master of electronic music from the Czech Republic, skillfully combines elements of techno to provide a compelling and passionate audio experience. Leoš Hort is HRTL, a musician that mapped his beginning from the sound of post-witch house and that influence drew him closer to the repeating rhythms of the 4 on the floor beat. Leoš Hort is the founder of the Bükko Tapes record label and is a member of the Bastl Instruments collective, which creates handmade music hardware. His music blends minimal techno and house elements, characterized by unique and improvisational performances that have garnered him recognition in the industry. HRTL‘s debut album, Hydroxid, was released in 2014, and his album Dataloss was awarded as the best electronic music record of 2015 by the Czech Academy of Popular Music. Starting off easy, no beats, just fluttering formations high above us in the sky, slow ringing bands of color linger, sad and quiet balloon figures are slowly reaching up, settling down, through horn and drone, reaching an almost a melodic flow of just tones, quieting and letting go, accepting peace and easy drifting, then to fade out into infinity.

Eden Grey “Exoplanet” 05:03 — From London to Miami, Eden Grey is the driving force behind the CV FREQS modular synthesis, electronic music, research, and networking movement, to build a global modular synthesizer community meetup arena, to bring together electronic music creators and enthusiasts globally, featuring diverse artists exploring diverse electronic sounds, from glitch-funk and techno to ambient, pushing boundaries with synthesizers. The closing track, “Exoplanet,” kicks off with a harsh chugging percussive pattern, throbbing and facing one way then another. As we get older the paths of the celestial bodies get more funk powered, pushing burning tones with a pulsing pattern, bumping right along at a good fast clip. The end comes circling around the further edges before entering deep space.
