Soundtrack for a dying world drags you into a year-round Halloween, turning every moment into a stylish, giallo-soaked plunge through dread, decay, and dark cinematic thrill.
Eternal Halloween in shadowed soundscapes
Is Halloween ever really over? In this giallo inspired descent into the very heart of the worlds decline, the darkest time of year is every time of year. “Once there was only dark” as the opening track is titled. This EP presents four tracks of macabre and sinister madness to help you realize just how good you’ve got it, because after you wake up from the nightmare, you’ll find yourself relieved.
The journey starts with a sampled quote the supernatural crime thriller True Detective, that says in part, “I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.”
Personally, I like existing, but for those who wish to travel down the roads of antinatalist philosophy as exemplified by the weird horror writer Thomas Ligotti (whose “corporate horror” stories I very much admire), this is the kind of soundtrack you want on your pessimistic journey.
What sounds like a grooving mellotron and the arpeggio pulses combined with rapid release drumming and gritty guitar grooves situate this firmly in the world of Italian seventies slasher films and revenant psyschodramas. As the edifice of modern times crumbles before our eyes, this music can be downright soothing. The sounds are just a bit grainy, like they had been recorded off old VHS tapes. But the playing is as intricate and clean as the work of Goblin or Morte Macabre.
The second song takes me to one of my favorite places in horror and weird literature and film: the abandoned amusement park. Something about the setting haunts so many people’s imaginations. The music on this number, “All I do now is hope” has a carnivalesque pace and calliope like madness to the sound, as the wheel of fortune spins to an unknown fate.
The third song titled “People don’t look up anymore the sky” features a menacing resonance ping of tweaking filters that builds and merges with slick drum attacks and progtronic guitars before the unhinged vocal mental collapse brings the listener to the verge of psychotic breakdown.
The entire EP is like a short film, a thrilling rollercoaster ride through suspense, mystery, and sheer cinematic brilliance. But wait, there’s more! The chef’s kiss at the end features samples of the monologue from the movie Pearl woven into a bed of sadistic undertones and fatalistic frequencies.
Halloween never ended and the end of the world is just a song away.
