A powerful sonic pandemonium
I’m not sure how this one got past us, and even though we try to keep our ears firmly planted in the underground, AN DER BEAT’s self-titled 1999 album for Evel is a notable smorgasbord of raw chaos. Combining punk, metal, electronics, noise, and hard-edged industrial shenanigans with a core made of (molten) rock and mechanical sounds, 1999 is reminiscent of Meat Beat Manifesto’s unadulterated distortion of Storm The Studio (1989) and the industrial-metal influx of Godflesh’s Godflesh EP (1990.) Barcelona’s Evel imprint has collated a fiercely explosive collection that comes out of nowhere. It’s a strangely surreal album that is a unique twist for a label that predominantly focuses on abstract electronics. In this case, sandblasted industrial-punk with a mid-90s sheen and a powerful sonic pandemonium to boot.
