When the press copy reads “compared to a classic deep Detroit / Artificial Intelligence” (and this is only for the drum programming), you’re gonna have to allow yourself a listen. The above extract refers to Permutation, a Barcelona based duo who met through a love of electronics and the hardware used to make such music. On their eponymous imprint, the pair opened their vinyl account in 2019 with the four tracker Many Worlds. Now they return with the three works of Epicycles.
Eclipse occupies the A. Astral notes, whistle chirps and rattles give way to a steady kick and snare in an opening of many textures. This array of sounds only grows denser before the stark break ushers in a minimal morphing bassline. The sheer volume of elements might make the piece seem busy or overly ornate, this isn’t the case. At its core, this is serious techno with a somewhat playful side. Juddering samples enter the orbit, circling the assortment of analogue sounds in this absorbing opener.

The flip is introduced by “Manifold.” Smooth percussion and dreamy keys are punctured by a thudding kick and cutting snare before looming notes descend against a ghosting sample. This sample jars with the other expertly woven elements, the range and selection of which is second to none. Rippling rhythms and trills swerve into darkened avenues with “Inner Motion.” Brighter tones soon arrive with a teetering balance found between weighty bass throbs and melodic wisps. The track is superbly crafted, delicate ephemeral and completely immersive.
Permutation are true sonic artisans, two who have been raised on the traditions of the best UK and US machine music. At times, their palette can be almost too bold with the tones and shades being employed. But this is minor and comes from a place of elaboration rather than exaggeration. “Deep Detroit / Artificial Intelligence” and then some.
