Tpiatnaw :: Untitled (Beartown)

Beneath its ruddy surface, Untitled exudes vintage analogue warmth with its heart-warming arpeggios—a kind of ambient/noise yin and yang.

Tpiatnaw ‘Untitled’

A DDT spraying of the storied English landscape, if the field recordings, an essential component in this bracingly toxic extended player, were in fact made in the artist’s home county of South Cheshire. The culprit is Tpiatnaw, who has also recorded for experimental tape and CDR operation Beartown Records alone or in company as Slump, Cavities and Black Sue.

The first of the two tracks on Untitled undulates until a riptide of distortion overtakes it from below, causing it to writhe until its very ghost flees with a long, distressing whine. The russet waves are relentless and harshly wanton; at the same time, a synthesized loop circles and bobs in dramatically soothing contrast. The second track, shorter by half at just under eight minutes, has a harmonium wheeze and pump action that, when listened to too closely, is as hypnotizing as the magician’s shiny pocket-watch.
