For over a decade, Ruby My Dear, real name Julien Chastagnol, has been a prolific practitioner of breakcore electronics. His latest for Analogical Force carries on the spastic sonic legacy he has perfected, with melodic fissures and shattered beats galore. Tracks like “PnT2” and “Fleucx Fleucx” are serene downtempo extrapolations of tinier glitch and bleeps, whereas “Calx” and “Monksy” offer harder drill’n breaks and unkempt rhythms twisting at every corner of the spectrum with a dosage of emotive textures. Finishing off with the most subdued track, “Witch” transcends both space and time with its instrumental rhythm—reminiscent of Amon Tobin and The Flashbulb’s gently manipulated berceuse soundtracks providing a calming haven. All things considered, Smooth Working is an appropriately named EP from the dependable Analogical Force label that easily compliments any experimental electronic music collection.
Smooth Working is available on Analogical Force, May 10, 2024. [Bandcamp]
