A pulsating, abstract, and translucent album
Released in February of 2024, Stormy Acres’ Phantom Detractor flew under our radar, yet it’s not completely invisible while lurking in the shadows. The appropriately named “Fog,” which meticulously crafts industrial electronic dronescapes encompassing hazy melodic and slow-churning beats, is where this subdued collection opens. On “Plan Disappoint,” the atmosphere is thick with blackened glitch granules, and halfway through, the melancholic drones of “Under” and “My New” cast a dystopian glow. While “Risk” closes with an impactful story of smudged mechanical knocks surrounded by eerie soundtrack motifs and a tumultuous rhythm pulling us down, “Scaped” and “Park” evolve with lighter hues compared to its siblings; a serene ebb and flow that feels powerfully subdued and enveloping. These are undoubtedly dark ambient veils woven by a dedicated sonic detailer. All in all, a pulsating, abstract, and translucent album.
