Brittle electrical fields of sound that explore futuristic sculptures jump between breaks, downtempo, funk, dub, roughened techno, and magnetized hip-hop.
A solid and groove-laden energy
The tracks from Many Moons Ago, recorded between 2009 and 2010, were kept on a dusty USB flash drive. As part of his celebrations for turning 40 in January 2024, Dodds Phil chose to locate a venue for the release of the music and his own independent label Waxing Crescent provide the deliverables. Brittle electrical fields of sound that explore futuristic sculptures jump between breaks, downtempo, funk, dub, roughened techno, and magnetized hip-hop.
The results are packed with a solid and groove-laden energy. Chaotically smooth bass-infusions from front to back, Dodds Phil discovers a treasure trove of timeless electronica for the kind of release that takes on a multitude of sparkling, lounge-infused rhythms. Even though these pieces were recorded over a decade ago—with a few collaborators including Qman1, Propa, and SB Live—they nevertheless have a lasting appeal that is enjoyable to listen to. Highlights include “Waning Gibbous,” “Beyond Category,” “Seven Up ft. Propa,” “Lifting ft. Qman1,” “Skyhook33,” and “Clipper (Reclipped).”
