Lantern :: Summer Knight (Occult Research)

Eight songs spread out in a tangled downbeat, acidic maelstrom of glitch, breaks, hip-hop, and leftfield bass contortions, Lantern also develops a jazzier side along the way.

Eight songs spread out in a tangled downbeat, acidic maelstrom of glitch, breaks, hip-hop, and leftfield bass contortions, Lantern also develops a jazzier side along the way. Brightly lit, bass heavy technoid contortions, Summer Knight doesn’t let up. Highlighting this sound is the powerful “Deep Gnosis” where broken beats blast away with detuned horns, sporadic claps, and abstract moods. Elsewhere you’ll find static bits and bytes floating in a stream on “Wryd Artefact,” an exploratory clip-hop vehicle that offers vivid funk elements for 3am dancefloors. The refined, ambient sizzling distraction of “Campfire” is a fine breakaway from the massive beatwork. Lantern’s skills for sharp staccato percussion and bass-infused bliss (ie. “Citadel”) showcases the raw nature Summer Knight exudes. Propelling broken beat to another level, this organic electrical soup is the perfect sonic escape—the title track and “Midnight Moon” summarizing it all. Fans of artists like Deceptikon, Machine Drum, and even DJ Shadow should take note.
