Sonae :: Summer (laaps)

Bold and defiant movements amass tensions dictating a contortion in an emotive reaction that at times bends the psychological perspective of Summer as Sonae’s sonic narrative cultivates arcs within mesmerizing chapters.

Equilibrium with an effervescent horizon

Cologne based experimental electronic producer Sonia Güttler (aka Sonae) returns with their latest release on centurion limited output label laaps. Summer is 40-minutes of confrontation, acceptance and pragmatic optimism. Bold and defiant movements amass tensions dictating a contortion in an emotive reaction that at times bends the psychological perspective of Summer as Sonae’s sonic narrative cultivates arcs within mesmerizing chapters.

The opening title track whose aural commentary introduces the listener to a moment in time, a territory where loss overthrows all sensibility and reasoning. It is only through the pounding sub bass you are projected forward as the timeline behind you disappears into a saturated ether where no memory holds long. Sonae contains the pace as we passage our way into a swinging acid pickup on “La Nuit,” a morphing side-chain that has a cleansing vacuum as pensive thoughts disengage into this impulse responsive environment.

Other highlights include “Soleil Noir,” with its granular spatial trajectory. Only a time-stretched gravitational pull keeps us within this soliloquy world of Summer. “Tropennacht,” also demonstrates time is a healer as Sonae organically reverses the melancholy into an equilibrium with an effervescent horizon. A touching collection of works that evoke mutual emotions through abstract discovery.
