Bass Kittens & Volum :: 120 EP (Pretension)

120bpm is such a nice tempo for this style of music—you get a slight yet not overpowering pump from the electro beat whilst there’s room aplenty for the straightforward yet not overly fussy Kraftwerkian melodic action.

Exploring the possibilities of sleek electro breaks at 120bpm, Bass Kittens and Volum collaborate for the 120 EP on Pretension. As electro breaks go Volum’s “Forced States of Matter” is a top class example. Shiny percussion is accompanied by lovely deep melodies reminiscent of the finer moments of Orbital alongside sweet glitchy production in the breakdown. So good and getting many a repeated hammering on these ears.

It’s a hard act to follow yet “Das Erdgeschoss” from Bass Kittens is an ace 7-minute work out. Neatly top and tailed with a delayed bass melody and plenty of sci-fi FX and percussion in between. Both then take to remix duties providing thorough and excellent reworkings of each other’s tracks.

Lovely laid back stuff—thoroughly recommended.
