Techno mischief-makers SHXCXCHCXSH return soon with a new LP on Avian. A follow-up to 2014’s Linear S Decoded, SsS… has the pron.-challenging Swedes revisit signature stop-mo percussion and hypertensile synthesis hitched to caustic sound design on 15 warping maximalist pieces.
SsS… sees these Swedes ‘digging into untamed textural territory full of delay feedback and troubled synth lines, keeping the Avian veneer of post-apocalyptic sonics intact.’ Despite being aligned with the aesthetic of Shifted’s imprint, and the label’s go-to themes (viz. unease and existential paranoia, a sense of loss and isolation), Avian’s press blurb has it that ‘there’s a cathartic, almost redemptive energy contained in the blistering waves of distortion that either intermittently burst into focus, or sit boldly at the forefront of the mix.’ Maybe so. Less contentious is its characterization as ‘[m]onochromatic and wrought with tension, powerfully dynamic and thoroughly organic in execution; an unbound, rolling matrix of white noise and wrought iron percussion, replete with disembodied choirs that pan queasily in and out of the sonic hinterland.’
SsS… is trailed by the just-turned-5 Avian as a SHXCXCHCXSH moving deftly across various points on a cline ‘from relative safety to absolute, untethered sonic hyperbole,’ promising ‘[a]t moments it comes tantalisingly close to cacophony–crushed delays feed back in on themselves as tracks build, rolling ominously on towards an as yet unidentified point.’ No clips yet, so start by feeling the track list!
