Renowned German producer and DJ Boris Brejcha, better known as the Joker, allowed us to listen to two teases off their upcoming album, Level One—both are pummeling techno tracks, so I have faith that the full album will be just as serious. Brejcha lays down a sinister EDM-techno groove in “Terminal Zero.” Deep, persistent pulses accompany the music as it moves along. I’m reminded of dub by a lot of soundscapes here, especially dub techno because of its unique sound palette. “Terminal Zero” is an upbeat and danceable track that makes me think of Intermix’s industrial-techno movements. Additionally, “Atlantis” features a menacing techno beat with subtle percussion accents—tonal pads flow with the gracefulness of water as it accuracy is measured using underwater pulses.
