The direction that Faex Optim (aka Wesley MacDonald) steers “Lucky Charm” is a little different from what we are used to from the multitalented sound sculptor. His crystallized sonic worlds mostly rested on well-established Boards of Canada psychedelic and downtempo dynamics, yet “Lucky Charm” exudes a reflective melody with danceable electronics and broken beats that we’re welcoming with open ears. An utterly refreshing and colorful track.
“The idea I had was for something that will have an impact in a live environment. It was driven by the distorted bass and drums (in which I experimented with a sampling technique—automating the play position, using a sample of a jazz drummer playing with brushes, something you can hear syncopating the beat against the main kick, snare, and hi hats). It was mastered by Jonas Munk (known for his work as Manual, in the band Causa Sui, and collaboration with Ulrich Schnauss).” ~Wesley MacDonald
“Lucky Charm” is available April 12, 2024 on most streaming platforms and is part of a larger body of work coming out later in the year as a vinyl LP. [Pre-Save]
