Sonnailles moves from restraint into release, but never fully lets go. It maintains the precision associated with Raster while leaning more into physicality and motion. The influence of rhythm and movement is more present, but still abstracted, never fully resolving into something predictable.
From carpet tiles to call center lines to Bulgarian bee barters—an uncanny symphony of sounds, woven seamlessly into one surreal tapestry.
Overall, Last Drives is an intriguing, ominous voyage through sounds and moods. Each piece maintains momentum and is unquestionably worth the time to absorb, and perhaps return to time and time again.
We find it all confusing and compelling at the same time. A serious snapshot through our day-to-day lives and the mundane commercial messaging that unfortunately is part-and-parcel of corporate powerhouse greed taking over our devices.
Matmos are masters of the electronic concept album, and I was delighted that the archive in question is the plethora of “sound” albums released by the maverick founder of Folkways, Moses Asch. Beyond the concept, these glitchy, rhythmic, noisy, textural pieces are a joy to listen to and behold.
