Zajwert :: Golem (Point Source Electronic Arts / ZOJ)

Nine tracks span around 40-minutes and the thorough sound vistas offer delicately shifting ambient-techno realms blending with pitter-patter glitch’n bleeps debris and braindance shards.

Embarking on unexpected electrical pathways

Accurately described as “using an odd assortment of instruments, sampled voices, and field recordings in avant-garde IDM,” Polish electro-acoustic artist Zajwert (aka Pawel Krzaczkowski) focuses on soft electronic flutter on Golem. Nine tracks span around 40-minutes and the thorough sound vistas offer delicately shifting ambient-techno realms blending with pitter-patter glitch’n bleeps debris and braindance shards (ref. “HONEST ANNIE” and “BRAZEN HEAD” respectively). It’s the tiny morsels of sound that Zajwert extracts from his machinery that are so enticing and unusual.

Abstract moments and ambient synth-swirls come in waves; for example on “MÖBIUS STRIP,” microscopic notes break apart only to recombine with emotively charged melodic lava flows. Elsewhere, tracks like “NUMBER STATIONS” dive into arcane trajectories only to eventually find their way through broken beat patches and subtle tonal strands drifting in the background. It’s within these hidden moments of time that spark on Golem—where you just don’t know what’s around the corner or beneath the surface. We can discover another example of found-sounds on “LEVITATION” where static pulses and miniature melodies merge with brittle field recordings echoing in the background.

Ultimately, Golem is a pleasant sonic transmission embarking on unexpected electrical pathways.
