A haunting cinematic landscape
XXU & UXX is a powerful post-industrial, witchery, and ethereal music project coming from San Francisco, consisting of LeeAnn Perry (XXU) and Amy Braun (UXX). Intentionally multidirectional, incorporating a lot of influences and original elements to deliver something catchy, unsettling, and moodily atmospheric, [channel] encompasses a punchy doom-laden hypnotic dancing trip punctuated by ominous ambient textures of sci-fi cinematic quality. The result is constantly engaging and pleasant with a variety of emotional levels and a nicely infused experience of timbres and sonic bleakness.
The musical architecture demonstrates great skills for harmony and melody. LeeAnn Perry reaches real ambient delight thanks to manipulated sound structures, synth lush sequences, resonating piano touches and intoxicating drone chords which evoke a scenic drama with lot of mental images. The voice of Amy Braun is exceptionally adapted to the ensemble with expressive vibrating effects and a blooming creative energy. The sound chemistry will have you travelling through a haunting cinematic landscape.
Also to notice the guest presence of dark ambient sound producer Leila Abdul-Rauf (whose work has been partly reviewed on Igloo) on the grieving, grandiose and spacey Cold And Cloud (2013). In its diversity, this album appears to be at a cross between Cosey Fanni Tutti, Coil, Burial, Lamia Vox, Kælan Mikla, Black Tape for a Blue Girl Band—with the addition of EBM—and witch house vibes (Mater Suspiria Vision, Salem). Recommended if you like both eerie and comforting ambiences with a singular gothic electro pop approach.
