South Korea’s Wona returns in a different spacesuit with Headphone Beats 2025-2026 by Winter Back, an album that feels less like a collection of tracks than a future archetype: a visceral, crystal-clear demonstration of what electronic sound work can become when technique, instinct and design aesthetics are allowed to mutate together. I’d hazard a guess it was made through a pair of headphones over the course of a year, because there’s something intensely close-up about it—and the title proposed, eh? On the surface, you might identify glitch aesthetics, but that’s only the doorway. Beneath it are drill and trap rhythms, tensile funk, lo-fi breakbeat trippery, obfuscation, drops, crescendos, proto-brass, rolling bass and complex and simple synthesis that seems perpetually on the verge of becoming something else.

I’m genuinely thrilled this landed on my figurative desk. It’s remorselessly stunning. “Matmat” has my heart: thunderous, rolling beats tumble around each other in waterfalls of hugeness and electrification while the low end holds you prisoner. “AGN” stinks—in the very best sense. Its half-time stutter is a screwface anthem of dropping beat and bass pulse, scratch-and-tear music so filthy you can almost smell it. Backward melodies emerge from the darkness to lighten the load, moments of tenderness appearing inside the delicate violence.

And this is the crucial distinction: this isn’t impenetrable sound design made to impress other sound designers. It’s a highly informed, deeply nuanced deviance in sound, rhythm and strata. Our title track “Winter Back” demonstrates an enviable approach to drum programming before its apparent mid-point collapse detonates into a spanking groove of epic proportions—the holy grail of contemporary electronic funk. “TLD” may contain the most outrageous break on the record, somehow folding rhythm back into itself and emerging as something entirely new: a funky drummer for 3026.

Nearly every track appears to reach a point where it dissolves, sheds its skin and reconstitutes somewhere else. These aren’t conventional breakdowns so much as dimensional ruptures. “Bedrop” is the perfect example: atmosphere and tense pads briefly suspend the album in mid-air before the future-klaxon begins its nagging ascent and the whole thing lurches forward again. “Set Jen” brings tribal toms and deranged circus bells into some kind of beautifully unstable agreement. “Dedication” removes the floor entirely, a beatless blast of aural oxygen that makes the subsequent savagery hit harder. “Starb” and “Still Ago” sound like saucepans being thrown down the stairs through a malfunctioning computer, grinding the listener into submission, before “220” closes the circuit with single hi-hits, elastic wubs and a sense of space suddenly expanding beyond the edges of the record.

It feels futuristic without resorting to the usual sci-fi vocabulary. Most importantly, it feels alive. It’s a great example of electronic music one would want to spend time inside, not simply consume. The deeper you go, the more its internal architecture reveals itself: tiny rhythmic decisions, concealed transitions, unexpected pockets of funk, bass frequencies that seem to have their own gravitational field. It rewards repeated listening because it keeps changing shape under examination. You don’t exhaust it; you develop a better understanding of how much is actually happening. A genuinely extraordinary piece of work. A 10/10 proposition where nothing is missing and nothing needs adding. Rare. Welcomed.
