From the needle drop the listener is battered by a barrage of machine beat acid snarls.
The revival of house has had two quite distinct floors. On one there has been the further development of deep house, stripped and soulful. Below that, in the sub-basement, there has been the propagation of acid house; a dirty and squalid mirroring of Chicago. One label dedicated to the latter has been Finland’s ProForm Series. The North European imprint has focused on 303s, 707s and 808s; twisting decaying circuit-boards into ghastly dancefloor grimaces. 2011 saw the first in the series of We Want You to Understand the Future, dark dance music for the crumbling present. As unemployment lines continue to grow its time for the next installment of brutalization.
Pakilan Teboil Acid Crew, perhaps of Morphology fame, open with savagery. Acid lines bulge and burst over frenzied claps and pulsing beats. The canines are on show, and ready to sink. Subutex Willer comes from an even more shadow filled den. Bass and hardship are blitzed in this heavy hitting piece. Henri Puolitaival is up next, teaming with AECK, for a lighter take on the acid sound. Elements of Analord are definitely present, with nods to EOD and FAH as knobs are tweaked for a friendly work of machine funk. Puolitaival is alone for “Reachin,” a quirky and clever piece of house. Near debutant Boneless One closes. A blustering bass filled bombardment ensues. But, behind the fog lies a subtle and deep quality that aches with a 90s techno sentimentality.
Based on the first installment of We Want You to Understand the Future expectations were high. They weren’t disappointed. From the needle drop the listener is battered by a barrage of machine beat acid snarls. But, there are less frenetic moments. Puolitaival introduces a playful side with some Braindance coming into play. The influences of Chicago, Detroit and the UK are all present here with the Finns looking to the past and into the future to give an audio prediction. Another superb plate from Finland.
