Valance Drakes :: Freedom Is Its Own Kind Of Salary (laaps)

Mixing soundtrack like instrumental elements, glitching organic noise, and boom-bap beats, it’s a lot of different ideas blended into one sound, but it works.

Ambience with layers of crawling, seething, living sounds

One of the things I love in ambient music is, more than just creating an environment, to also populate that environment with its own native creatures.

Valance Drakes builds on deep reverberating ambience with layers of crawling, seething, living sounds punctuated by sparse kick/snare hip-hop beats and Freedom Is Its Own Kind Of Salary sets the stage. The tracks all seem to flow into one slowly changing mix with only subtle shifts in the overall mood of the tracks—a bit melancholy, introspective, and drifting. That said, there is a surprising depth to each one of these tracks which takes awhile to unfold. Mixing soundtrack like instrumental elements, glitching organic noise, and boom-bap beats, it’s a lot of different ideas blended into one sound, but it works. Just when you think you’ve heard it all.
