Both artists transcend mere nostalgia
Last month the Spanish label Evel released Discount Computer Software, an experimental multi-genre genre split album produced by Sideboard and Amorobsoleto from the US and Spain respectively. Although the two artists seem very different at first—as Sideboard mainly focuses on blip-hop cuts that may resemble Prefuse 73 and Amorobsoleto produces electro tunes that remind of Siriusmo—as the album evolves, they complement each other while their tracks alternate, in a way that they seem to merge, genre wise, into one electronica entity, where in the end the listener can’t differ who’s tune is whose.
Another important point to this release is that it’s heavily sample based. The references sway from Cutty Ranks to The Chameleon, TLC to Timbaland, 90s classic beat loops to breakcore, which should make old-school listeners very pleased with each memory recollection. Nonetheless, both artists transcend mere nostalgia as they not only use sampling as an important part of their creative process but also structure their tracks on original synth lines and beat making that bring freshness to the production. That said, among a very eclectic joy ride, I’d highlight Amorobsoleto’s “Cheating Life,” “Isolated,” and “Final Boss Pill” and Sideboard’s “Gothic Dolphins,” “ScriptKid606 (Glasgow Mix),” and “Puff DMT Run Linux.”
