Ruxpin :: We Become Ravens (n5MD)

Iceland’s Ruxpin (aka Jónas Thór Guðmundsson) presents his latest for n5MD titled We Become Ravens. The whole album is as if recorded in deep water on the dreamy ocean bed. Synths are developed in a way that are reminiscent of a past era with a true calling—an album to really chill out with when observing a personal day.

Intro “Piano” sets the mood for a serene transport, just as “Memories Warm You Up, But They Also Tear You Apart” comes with several layers of thought streams singling a sense of an old feeling into uneven beats as it grows with more harmony towards its end. It’s a theme we see repeated again in other pieces throughout.

An underwater sense of feeling from smooth synthesized beat workings to IDM terrain (after the midway point) is apparent on this 15-track release. The title track ripples sounds in etheric form. “Stirrings Of The Heart” has even more layers, as if a sudden rush to the brain elicited emotive feelings and lucid dreaming. “Lullaby For Mountains” is an interesting work on percussion mashed sounds for a higher sense of a flying kind. “Glimmer of Hope,” a fragrant, Plaid-inspired work is a bliss-infused, melody bursting smorgasbord worth the price of admission alone.

Generally put, We Become Ravens is a liquid album with fluid tracks touching on emotional expressions of the windy mind. IDM formulas on a soft bed of synths and a sobering hint of odd sounds from nature and the subconscious. A great connection between electronic and analog elements, offering nothing but a colorful production on a winding path.

We Become Ravens is available on n5MD.
