By pushing and pulling on a vast tapestry of textured noises and glittery soundscapes, the exploratory nature of this album is offset by its attention to nuanced, imprecise and sparkling electronic flutter.
A beatless journey of calming tones, drones, and glitched noodling
Roel Funcken describes his latest as “a new ambient album with some modular going on,” and that’s quite an understatement to say the least. Everything recorded in one take, S1.MK2 is not the usual projection we’re used to from the Amsterdam-based skewed beat, bass and sound design technician—instead we have fourteen tracks fizz and fuzz through dilapidated atmospheres and emotive slivers. With all pieces birthed from modular machinery, tangled blips’n bleeps embark on a beatless journey of calming tones, drones, and glitched noodling. It’s when Roel tinkers with arcane lullaby motifs that S1.MK2 begins to form and simultaneously deform. By pushing and pulling on a vast tapestry of textured noises and glittery soundscapes, the exploratory nature of this album is offset by its attention to nuanced, imprecise and sparkling electronic flutter.
