Pentagrams Of Discordia made a strong impression on us in 2023, easing us into a downtempo gloss and rich aural tapestry on Deprogrammed, and they’ve returned with a seven-track EP for Pulse State. This time, the eerie visual cues are charged once more. Crunchy beats and vintage electronic kaleidoscopes are deeply explored, slowly luring us in with warped melodies, slow motion rhythms, and unyielding atmospheric textures and tones. Instrumental electronica at its core, there are peaks and valleys, dramatic soundscapes, and faint drum pulsars at every turn. Although there is a distinct BOC vibe with warm fuzzy synths and skillfully placed vintage samples, POD forge parallel yet persistent routes with thickened rhythms and subtle bricolage, all the while retaining nostalgic echoes and fuzzy (if not creepy) visuals. A stunningly surreal audible passage for 2024. It’s difficult to pin the highlights, although “Psycho-Metaphysics,” “Brain Controlling,” “Mindflux,” and “Planetary Radiation (RAW)” are standouts.
