Olli Aarni :: Loput (laaps)

Olli Aarni finds faint ambient glitters from exploded stars many light years away and delivers their remnants in beautifully serene audible formation.

Tranquilized atmospheres from out of this world

Two long form pieces from Helsinki-based Olli Aarni focus on what may appear (on the outside) as dark ambient drones, but instead, offers blissful sonic hues, calm drifting tentacles, subtle wind gusts, and tranquilized atmospheres from out of this world.

Roderick Julian Modell’s The Autonomous Music Project (Lunar, 1998) comes to mind while listening to Loput. “Huoneen Yllā,” in particular, pulls us through vast soundscapes of dust and debris, whimsical and yet suspended in a time loop. “Aallookossa” delivers parallel sunbursts and an ebb and flow that is both hypnotic and surreal. Its cascading wind draws us into gentle waveforms we never knew existed.

Two tracks spanning over 38 minutes, Olli Aarni finds faint ambient glitters from exploded stars many light years away and delivers their remnants in beautifully serene audible formation. And even with its roughened textures, tones, tension and turbulence, Loput (Finnish for “a conclusion”) is aptly titled and utterly engaging start to finish.

Loput is available on LAAPS. [Bandcamp]
