Blending analog machines with raw instrumental workouts

There’s a certain amount of calming dynamics on offer with Subliminal Mind Pub where Vancouver, Canada-based Nick Herman blends analog machines with raw instrumental workouts—looping guitars and brittle technoid fissures with precision. Glitched-out blips and bleeps expand on tracks like “Inward Oval Eel” where early Artificial Intelligence-era electronica (Warp) comes to life and gives us a nostalgic groove to latch onto. More contemplative tunes like “Joie de Funk” and the tangled treasure-trove of “Rainbow Guardian” bounce about with spontaneous flares. Such an EP of abstract beauty and crunchy analog acrobatics are both chilled and excited as Nick Herman designs dense collections of modular electroacoustic tracks. Experience how the closing piece, “Diogenes,” evolves and takes flight, like a strange concoction of Phoenecia and Subotnick messing about. What a perfect working title too—capturing what could be expected lurking way off in the distance among strangely captivating shapes (courtesy of the cover art by Patrick Kyle.)
