Retic :: mind blind found sound (Self Released)

Reminding us of earlier times when artists like Arovane, Phonem, Lackluster (et al) crafted delicately woven and fresh electronics, Retic traverses familiar sonic terrain.

Refined electronics from IDM’s earlier years

There’s a sonic swirling of ideas and soundscapes within on mind blind found sound; Retic (aka Sacramento-based, Indianapolis transplant Douglas Teike) is at the helm, once again stirring this mighty ship. It’s a bit of a turbulent voyage, but also serene and drifting with downtempo extracts, kaleidoscope rhythms, and a sense of refined electronics from IDM’s earlier years. With 20 tracks, there’s a lot to digest, and the amalgamation could have benefited from a slight trimming.

Reminding us of earlier times when artists like Arovane, Phonem, Lackluster (et al) crafted delicately woven and fresh electronics, Retic traverses familiar sonic terrain, his production techniques tend to segue from old-school to new-school techniques where glitch, dub and pitter-patter clicks ‘n cuts genres meander without any apparent direction. Perhaps considered a compilation of found sounds from the archives and extraneous tunes lumped into one succinct digital package, the ebb and flow is still consistent even with its lighter tunes balancing the heavier ones. And yet, it’s when Retic dives full throttle into his machinery that we’re most engaged. Highlights include “Hinge1,” “oberheim707,” “moogments,” “how deep is this bottomless pit,” “asia,” and “boogalabuh.”
