So this may be a 12” dedicated to a canine companion, but as silly as that sounds the EP doesn’t lapse into the stereotype. Instead this Gothenburg artist brings together four varied cuts, showcases his abilities and leaves you more than satisfied.
Jens Records has been on the go now for a few years. The brainchild of musician Jens Wickelgren, the Swedish label has focused on its creator’s sounds whilst pulling in some like-minded characters along the way. 2015 sees Wicklegren under his Enmetertre guise for a vinyl tribute to his…dog Herman?
The rumbling, spiraling sequences of “I Need Your Love” introduces label boss’s latest undertaking. The clean cut style of “Pontus Forever” follows. Right, we’re in for a smooth and functional house record, one with a bit of dancefloor thump. You’d be wrong. “Thrill and the Lies” is perhaps the rarest beast of the EP and shifts the goalposts. Sitting somewhere between pop, house and Skittles this sugary sweet synth track is strangely addictive. Spoken lyrics loop, heavily accented words throwing up images of late night seediness. Enmetertre enjoys coming at electronic music from different angles, and that tendency to bend styles is present up to the very end. “An Acid Song About Herman” gathers acrid squawk and bruised claps, but behind the steady beats and the squirming synth sit lilting emotive notes.
So this may be a 12” dedicated to a canine companion, but as silly as that sounds the EP doesn’t lapse into the stereotype. Instead this Gothenburg artist brings together four varied cuts, showcases his abilities and leaves you more than satisfied. A tribute Herman can be proud of.
