Possibly one of the top EP’s of 2024, Mastrapa finds a cozy spot to stitch beats, bass, and blistered distortion as atmospheric electro layers weave deeply into the fabric of distant memories.
Saturated electro forms
The first track on Mastrapa’s new Fluidity Formations EP for Miami’s Schematic Music Company, “Cycle Function,” is pretty spectacular. Combining saturated electro forms with melodic and explosive jagged fissures, in just seven minutes, the artist reveals an increasing alchemy behind the machinery. Pummeling beats and crushing bass grind away and subtly shifting synth strands dissolve within diced vocal abstracts.
With its thudding percussion, glitch tentacles, and rhythmic structures, “Enamored Demise” maintains the momentum; its ethereal appeal drifts in the background while swirling blips and bleeps engulf our senses. “Conceptual Depths” propels a funkier and robotic groove with tones and drones reverberating near the ocean’s undulating seafloor. “Placidity,” a saccharine electro slice of life, bookends the EP and adds to its translucent magnetism.
