Malarki’s full length album for Errorgrid titled Asunder (defined as apart; divided) is full of bursting and brittle electrical fields, delivering an impacting sonic punch of soundtrack behemoths and shuffling industrial textures. The unpredictable noises and pulsing scrapes of “Torn” feel purely mechanical and robotic, as “Incursion Against Time” finds its scorching rhythm and emotive ferocity operating at full capacity near the end as an inferno of melodic fibers disintegrate. Malarki (aka San Francisco based Patrick Coleman) drives his message of nonlinear electronics and technoid structures via “Nothing Unreal,” while tracks like “Empyrean Mayhem” are so thick and smoldering that it’s difficult to release yourself from its grasp. Ultimately a powerful and exploratory selection of industrial and surreal dystopian soundtracks (witness the immensity of closing composition “Kaihyo”) to keep us fully riveted. Whether or not we are apart (or divided) as a society, Asunder seems to magnetically pull us together.

“A sonic collage fit for the current times and beyond, taking the concept of natural decay and rebirth to new heights.” ~Bandcamp
