Magnetic showcases Luxus Varta and his ever-developing sound. Constructing the sextet, elements of breaks and electronica are folded into his overarchingly electro sound. Dark tones and clever compositions from an artist garnering deserved attention from both labels and listeners alike.

Arguably, Luxus Varta (aka Emeric Di Paolo) has enjoyed a rise that has been both quiet and seriously impressive. From his first release, just over a decade ago, his brand of incisive and emotional machine music has graced labels like Klakson, Shipwrec, brokntoys, and Solar One Music with sounds that exude his subtlety of craft and enviable ability. Such quality obviously hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Specimen Records drafting in Luxus Varta for Magnetic.

Clinical pulsations and the roar of the factory horn usher in the crystalline chords of the title piece. A clean rasping rhythm is the central column around which a spread of sounds is supported. Gentle strings, moaning metal, distant voices and echoing abstraction coil together in this hauntingly fragile work. An industrial girder runs through the EP, the cold rust coming to the surface in the percussion of the off-kilter “Broken Tube.” The flip is introduced by the fast and frigid “Gelatin 55.” Vacuum sealed snares are dowsed in an electrified web of chords, an eerie spiral of melody descending. Rich bass and cinematic keys close the 12”. “Colour Splitter” stalks behind incising drums, menace amplified by the balance of beat onslaught and unnerving instrumentation. “Post-Mortem,” a digital bonus track, continues where “Colour Splitter” left off. Slasher synth-lines are galvanized by slicing snares in this shadowy late-night affair. The charged “Linoleum” ends the EP. Quick-paced, spectral lines are shrouded in a haze of distortion.
